Marseille manager Elie Baup praised his team for reaching a new milestone in the club’s rich history at the weekend.
“It’s symbolic and a big moment for Marseille to become the first club to reach 1000 Ligue 1 victories,” Baup said following his squad’s 2-0 home win against 16th-placed Montpellier on Saturday.
He added: “We’re very happy about that and the fact that our squad have contributed to it with this third straight win.”
Marseille responded magnificently to their 2-0 defeat away to Arsenal in midweek when Florian Thauvin scored his fourth league goal of the season against Montpellier in the 36th-minute.
Saber Khalifa then drove in his first league goal of the season on 93 minutes to keep Marseille in fourth place.
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Baup was pleased with Marseille’s quality of play.
“We needed to be strong and organised and the players were just that,” he said.
Montpellier manager Jean Fernandez, meanwhile, blamed the first-minute injury to striker Djamel Bakar for the loss.
“I have quite a few regrets this evening because we didn’t convert the chances we created for ourselves in the second half,” Fernandez said.
“We lost Djamel Bakar to injury and that was a tough blow.”
